SHAMS Company Formation

What Is SHAMS — Sharjah Media City Free Zone?
Sharjah Media City (SHAMS) is a government-backed free zone established in 2017, located in Al Messaned, Sharjah. Strategically positioned just 15 minutes from Sharjah International Airport and 30 minutes from Dubai International Airport, SHAMS was built to foster creativity, entrepreneurship, and digital commerce in the UAE.
Despite its name pointing to media, SHAMS is far from media-only. The free zone has expanded to cover a broad spectrum of business activities across four main license categories — Service, Trading, Industrial, and Holding — making it one of the most versatile and accessible free zones in the country for startups, freelancers, SMEs, and international investors.
With over 12,000 business registrations, SHAMS Sharjah is one of the fastest-growing free zones in 2026 — attracting entrepreneurs from more than 160 countries who want a credible UAE business address without paying premium free zone pricing. The free zone is also one of the few in the UAE that does not require an annual audit report for license renewal, significantly reducing your ongoing compliance burden.

Is SHAMS Right for Your Business?
SHAMS is the UAE's most cost-effective free zone for solo founders, creative professionals, and service-based businesses. If your priority is getting a legitimate UAE company and residency visa at the lowest possible first-year cost — with minimal paperwork and a fast, remote setup — SHAMS delivers better value than any comparable option.
SHAMS is the right choice if you:
- Are a freelancer, solopreneur, or startup with a lean first-year budget
- Work in media, content, advertising, digital marketing, design, or creative services
- Run an e-commerce, dropshipping, or digital marketplace business
- Offer consulting, IT, software, or professional services
- Need a UAE company and residency visa at the lowest all-in cost
- Want up to 5 activities on a single license across different sectors
- Prefer a multi-year license to avoid annual renewal admin (2, 3, and 5-year options)
- Want to avoid mandatory annual audit requirements
Consider other free zones if:
- You need warehouse space or heavy industrial facilities (RAKEZ, JAFZA, or Hamriyah Free Zone recommended)
- You require a premium Dubai address for enterprise client credibility (DMCC or IFZA is better)
- You need regulated financial services licensing (DIFC or ADGM)
- You plan to open a physical retail outlet on the UAE mainland
